| | | The Desi Diva Is the brain child of Anjali Bansal. Our mission is to provide an outlet for Indian women living in the US, trying to fit in while still maintaining ties to our roots. I recognized early in life that that balance isn't easy. Some of us achieve easier than others - they make it look so easy and appear to have it all! Our families have been our biggest supporters, providing us with all the necessities in life as wall as fulfilling our material wants. However, as products of Indian parents with Western friends, education and other influences, we face issues that our parents may not necessarily be able to relate to or have the understanding to guide us through.
As first or second generation Indian women, we face problems that are still taboo in our culture, regardless of how progessive our family and friends are. Many of us grew up in the "no boys, no dating, no boyfriends" household that suddenly became "I can' believe you aren't married yet" seemingly over night. Interracial marriage, adoption, divorce, mental health are all hush hush at the dinner table. We love mom's home cooked food, however cannot find recipes or cooking tips that even come close to what mom can make. We rely on fashion and beauty tips that don't suit our figures, our skin types, our coloring. But at the same time, we are prominent members of society; we are giving of time, love, friendship and trust. We used to think it was an anomoly when a Desi was in the 6:00 news. It's amazing how quickly that is changing!
So what exactly is The Desi Diva? The Desi Diva was created to provide an outlet for us, to share our experiences, learn from others, and realize that we're not alone. We are each diva's in our own righl - It's high time we unleash it! | |
