| | | In today's economy, everyone is trying to save money. It takes a lot of restraint to not fall victim to great sales on clothes, shoes and accessories to keep our wardrobes fresh and trendy. One of the most economical ways we can add a splash of color and funk to an outfit is with a nice bright scarf paired with a bold accessory.
Scarves have been an integral part of fashion for centuries, dating back as far as the ancient Romans. Recently, the scarf has made a huge comeback, becoming a must have fashion item. Available in limitless shapes, sizes, materials and designs, scarves can be worn as head wraps, as a belt, tied at the wrist, over the shoulders, or around the strap of a handbag. The possibilities are endless.
We polled our favorite Desi Divas and found three popular ways to wear scarves that update any outfit for less than $50.
The Euro Knot
With an oblong scarf, fold the scarf in half lengthwise. Wrap the folded scarf around your neck from behind. Let the loop hang over one shoulder. Feed the other ends through the loop and tighten slightly. This works with wool, pashmina and silk scarves.
The Kelly Head Wrap
Named for the famous American actress-turned-Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly, this style protects your hair while still looking glamourous! Start with a square scarf (or an oblong scarf for extra flair).
To tie a square scarf, fold it diagonally to form a triangle. Place the scarf over your head with the folded edge facing forward. Bring the folded corners down under the chin and cross them in front, pushing the folded corners back around the neck on each side. Behind the neck, gather the folded corners and tie them together, making sure to catch the loose corners of the scarf under the knot being formed. Leave the ends loose, or tuck them under as you prefer. Add a pair of oversized, dark sunglasses and you'll be ready for your closeup. You'll also avoid the dreaded "hat head" that comes from wearing wool caps!
Cowl Style, Side Pinned
For the cowl style, fold an oblong scarf twice to form an "S". . Place the folded scarf over one shoulder with one end of the scarf hanging freely down the back. Secure the scarf with a jewelry pin of your choice, placing the pin between the breast and shoulder, so that it is closer to the shoulder. Now, drape the remaining length of the scarf loosely around the bust and over the opposite shoulder. Quick and easy to wear, a cowl scarf is good for any occasion and lends an elegant appeal to the wearer.
